Good Old Days

My generation is watching the current nostalgia for the good old days of the sixties with a combination of amusement and consternation.

It’s easier to understand young women’s fascination with the Mad Men wardrobe when you realize that they have no experience with girdles or garter belts. The yearning for the buttoned-up office look of pantyhose, suit, collar stays and cufflinks emerge from those who have only experienced work in the freedom of jeans and a t-shirt.

The Past is Present

This just in! We can’t help but be surrounded by the past. And it’s not just a conclusion I came to during my slight obsession with AMC’s Mad Men (although that series most definitely helped spark the “out with the new, in with the old” mantra). Not only are we being nostalgic about memories/pop culture from the past, but we’re also nostalgic about memories we never had to begin with—more like idealistic views of the past we (might have) never lived.  This nostalgia trend can be found in lots of different outlets nowadays…

Urban Development

Have you heard about the proposed Downtown Los Angeles streetcars? Streetcars shuffled Angelenos through Downtown years ago, and the revival to bring them back has begun. The Los Angeles Daily News reported “the new cars would be thoroughly modern, sleek and environmentally sound” but “nostalgia is their biggest emotional selling point.”
